In traditional photography, portraits typically focused on capturing a subject's likeness, often emphasizing realism and controlled composition. In contrast, contemporary portraiture embraces a broader range of media and techniques, including digital manipulation, mixed media, and abstract or surrealist elements, to explore deeper themes of identity, culture, and the fluidity of self.

In this dynamic class, students will delve into the intersection of identity, material, and portraiture, utilizing non-traditional mediums to express personal narratives. Led by Karen Navarro, the course encourages conceptual exploration through individual and group critiques. Students will learn to articulate their artistic goals and stories they wish to tell, research diverse materials, and test them while fostering a hands-on approach to experimentation and troubleshooting. Image appropriation and ethical considerations will be discussed. By the end of the course, students will develop their unique artistic voices through innovative practices and elevate their portraiture skills in this transformative artistic journey.
