Meetings: Saturdays, 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM CST (4 sessions)
Location: Houston Center for Photography
Cost: $380 (HCP members can receive a 10% discount)
Instructor: Danielle Villasana
Skill Level: Intermediate
An oft-overlooked aspect of the photography practice, editing is a crucial—if not the most important—element in a visual storyteller’s growth and development. Taking time, care, and intention to select images directly affects how photographers think about making images and how to better build cohesive bodies of work. By taking a deep dive into your pictures and learning the hows and whys behind the selection process, not only will you complete this course with a powerful series of images, but you will also acquire new tools to improve your photographic practice altogether.
This course is designed for photographers wishing to build an edit for their portfolio, website, contest submission, or beyond. Together we will evolve an archive of hundreds/thousands of images into an intentional presentation of pictures. Topics include organizing your work environment, streamlining your workflow, the editing process, sequencing principles, and preparing images for release. Students are expected to bring existing imagery to organize and feel comfortable working in a group setting offering constructive feedback.
Note: PhotoMechanic will be used for demonstrations in class. However, students will be able to apply the methodology and principles to the image-management software of their choosing.
Objectives:
Create a powerful body of images that showcase your strongest work
Streamline your workflow and become familiar with the technical aspects of the editing process
Develop a deep understanding of the selection process
Learn how to build an engaging narrative through sequencing
Position your work to accomplish your objectives (if relevant), including updating/creating your website, building a portfolio, preparing a contest submission, etc.
Prerequisites:
Students should have a large collection of images that they wish to edit into a portfolio or be working on a personal series/project. Students should have experience with image-management software such as PhotoMechanic, Adobe Lightroom Classis, Capture One, or similar.
Course Prep:
For the first class, please prepare a selection of 50 images as a starting point — whether single images or from 1-2 projects — to be edited in a group setting. Students will need to submit a wider edit of upward of 200 images later during the course. Submission instructions will be emailed to registrants before the class.
