The Photographer as a Storyteller (Mar 1-15)
Dates: March 1 - 15, 2025
Meetings:
Session I: Saturday, 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM CST (online)
Sessions II & III: Saturdays, 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM CST

Skill Level: Intermediate
Whether you’re in the beginning phase of a photography project, toward the end, or somewhere in between, this course will help you find your unique visual voice and also learn how to create a successful photography practice. By delving into the storyboarding and editing phases of your project through group critiques, discussions, and exposure to inspiring work of industry professionals, you’ll strengthen your visual storytelling abilities and create an impactful body of work. Additionally, this course will touch on how to get your work out in the world through pitching to editors, submitting to grants and contests, and/or promotional platforms. In between classes, participants will actively work on their photo stories. This course is rooted in photojournalism and will be taught through that lens.
Objectives:
Find and hone your visual voice with ethics and intention as a guide
Strengthen storytelling skills that are rooted in aesthetics and ethics while also providing important information
Become familiar with using tools such as a photography list, memory maps, and sequencing/editing to strengthen storytelling skills
Begin or continue a personal photography project that will be critiqued and workshopped during this course in a group setting
Practice skills to help foster trust, transparency, communication, and respect with people photographed
Familiarize yourself with avenues to support, publish, and promote your work, such as through pitching, grants and contests, and online platforms
Prerequisites:
Photography I or being comfortable using your camera in Manual mode. People who have some familiarity with constructing a story through photography will benefit the most.
Course Prep:
If you would like to begin a personal project for this course, send 2-3 ideas before the start of the first class. If you would like to continue a personal project for this course, send 10-20 images before the start of the first class. Submission instructions will be emailed to registrants before the class.
