Staged Narratives: Mise end Scene (Mar 29-Apr 5)
Dates: March 29 - April 5, 2025
Meetings: Saturday & Sundays, 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM CST (3 sessions)

In this course, students will learn how to create visual scenes as tools of expression examining contemporary issues through photography, performance, and installation. Together we will review the different uses of the mise-en-scène in the history of art. Participants will be provided with different tools they can use to convey social criticism, contrasting the effects of fantasy with reality – creating an artistic interference with social themes. This course aims to facilitate the definition of cultural expression based on the relationship with its social context, legitimizing issues and concerns of communities. Students will collaborate in a creative dialogue while applying an array of visual strategies and techniques.
Objectives:
Discuss various approaches to staging
Gain an artistic historical perspective of the mise-en-scène in different mediums
Review both painting and photography references
Practice using important components: light, symbols, color, and semiotic techniques
Understand the production aspects of creating staged imageryDevelop your photographic language and portfolio by receiving constructive feedback
Prerequisites:
Photography I or being comfortable using your DSLR or mirrorless camera in Manual mode.
Course Prep:
For the first class, please be ready to present yourself, your ideas, and tentative projects you would like to work on
