Girls’ Own Stories
Girls’ Own Stories uses photography, collage, mixed media and writing as a means of creative expression and empowerment for K-8th grade girls. The program is designed to help girls develop their technical skills in photography and storytelling as they learn about the contributions of women artists by viewing and discussing their work. Girls create journals to write about their experiences and respond to prompts provided by the teaching artist, offering them the space to reflect on their images and help promote self-awareness and confidence.
First piloted in 1994, Girls’ Own Stories is HCP’s oldest Community Engagement program and was revived in the Spring 2016 through a partnership with Wesley Community Center. Since then, it has been taught in schools and community centers around the greater Houston area such as Baker Ripley Schools, Culture of Health Advancing Together, and more.
