HCP’s annual gala will be held on Thursday, March 20, 2025. This year, we’ll be returning to the Hotel ZaZa for our Print Auction & Party. Celebrating 43 years as the Houston Center for Photography! Auction Co-Chairs, Board Member and interior designer Gin Braverman, and gallerist and entrepreneur Magen Pastor look forward to welcoming you for an evening of art, fine dining, and fundraising in support of HCP’s programming.
HCP is thrilled to be celebrating the career of Malcolm Daniel, the Gus and Lyndall Wortham Curator of Photography at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Malcolm Daniel joined the staff of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, in December 2013 after 23 years on the curatorial staff of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, including nine as head of that museum’s Department of Photographs. As the Gus and Lyndall Wortham Curator of Photography at the MFAH, Malcolm guides the department’s acquisitions, exhibitions, and programming across the full history of the medium, stepping into the “big shoes” of Anne Wilkes Tucker, who built the Museum’s photography collection for nearly forty years before her retirement in 2015. A graduate of Trinity College, Hartford, (BA 1978) and Princeton University (PhD 1991), Malcolm makes no secret of his love of early photography, having curated or co-curated many exhibitions at the Met focused on key figures in the history of photography including the French architectural and landscape photographer Edouard Baldus and his British contemporary Roger Fenton; the great portraitist of Victorian England, Julia Margaret Cameron; the Impressionist painter Edgar Degas; and the early-20th-century masters of the medium, Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Steichen, and Paul Strand. In Houston, he’s been able to bring that knowledge to bear in building the Museum’s 19th-century holdings, but has equally enjoyed expanding his horizons with exhibitions of contemporary work by Dawoud Bey, David Levinthal, Vera Lutter, Sally Mann, Fazal Sheikh, and a survey of contemporary Cuban photography that opened in September 2024. Malcolm has served on HCP’s Exhibitions Committee and Advisory Council and was guest curator for the 2014 Members Exhibition.
