Out & About: The Rodeo (Mar 1-15)
Dates: March 1 - 15, 2025
Meetings: Saturday, 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM CST (3 sessions)
Location: Online Zoom Classroom (sessions 1 & 3) + Photographing at the rodeo (2nd session)
Cost: $280 (HCP members can receive a 10% discount)

Skill Level: Intermediate
Dive into the dynamic world of rodeo photography and capture the excitement, culture, and traditions of this iconic Houston event. We’ll explore techniques specific to photographing at the rodeo, including managing fast shutter speeds to capture motion, working with natural and artificial lighting in outdoor and indoor settings, and composing images that convey the energy and emotions of the rodeo. Participants will also consider the cultural significance of the rodeo, using their photographs to reflect its role in communities today.
From fast-paced action shots in the arena to candid moments in the crowd and behind the scenes, students will learn how to tell a compelling story through their images. By the end of this course, students will have built a portfolio that showcases the full spirit of the rodeo, from the high-adrenaline action of the events to the quiet, reflective moments that often go unnoticed.
Note: The course tuition does not include entry to the rodeo. Students must purchase their tickets individually.
Objectives:
Photograph dynamic images based on motion and action
Adjust effectively to challenging lighting conditions
Learn how to tell a story through photography
Enhance composition and framing skills
Reflect the cultural significance of the rodeo
Refine your image processing techniques and enhance your pictures effectively
Prerequisites:
Photography I or being comfortable using your camera in Manual mode.
Course Prep:
To get a sense of where you are photographically, please send a portfolio of images that represent your work (5-20 images total). Submission instructions will be emailed to registrants before the class.
