The Art of Photo Collage - Teens (Jun 16-20)
Dates: June 16 - 20, 2025 (no class on June 19)
Meetings: Monday - Friday, 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM CST (4 sessions)

Cost: $245 Tuition + $20 Materials (HCP members can receive a 10% discount)

Collage is one of the easiest, most accessible, and readily available art forms in the world today – from moodboarding and scrapbooking to collaging posters on a bedroom wall. In this course, instructor and artist Tay Butler guides students through their exploration of the medium of collage by showcasing multiple methods and materials while inspiring participants to apply this medium conceptually.
Which papers and glues work well together? How to cut perfect forms? Which magazines to use? This course answers all these questions and more, giving away the practical secrets to collage-making used by Tay Butler to construct the works he is most known for. We will review the work of Romare Bearden, considered the pioneer of contemporary collage. Bearden’s work was instrumental in reintroducing collage as “fine art” by aligning the aesthetics of the medium with the material conditions of his community. Other contemporary collage artists and thinkers will discussed as well, inspiring students to explore their creative drive and interests. Each participant will leave with a group of finished collages depicting their teen identity through visual art.
Objectives:
Develop your personal portfolio
Identify materials for collage-making
Demonstrate the differences between materials
Engage with contemporary methods of collage-making
Understand the ideas of Romare Bearden and the specific methods he employed
Explore personal histories through photos and/or personal writings
Create permanent collages to take home
