











Know Thyself: Perspectives in Art-making (Jul 24-Aug 21)
Dates: July 24 - August 21, 2025
Meetings: Thursday, 4:30 PM to 7:30 PM CST (5 sessions)

Discovering your creative voice within one’s photography can feel challenging and somewhat intimidating. Held in the Anne Wilkes Tucker Study Center at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, this course will explore artistic perspective through an investigation of various of artistic careers. By examining the works of artists such as Robert Frank, Laura Gilpin, Alejandro Cartagena, Gay Block, and Catherine Wagner, to name a few, students will understand how distinct perspectives guide an artist's career and practice. Serving as an artistic incubator, this course offers students a supportive environment to interrogate their own point of view and personal approach to artmaking.
Objectives:
Understand the foundational role of personal perspective in artmaking
Recognize the link between personal and universal themes
Understand the curatorial perspective when examining artists’ work
Examine concepts and artistic approaches for potential projects
Receive valuable feedback and guidance from your instructor and peers
Build skills in analysis and critique
Expand your artistic background
Prerequisites:
Students must bring to all classes an open mind and a willingness to participate.
Course Prep:
Students should bring a PowerPoint with 3-5 of their images to discuss with the class.
