Contemporary culture is characterized by the constant creation (and consumption) of visuals that create stories and narratives. This one-week intensive course introduces students to the principles and guidelines of image-making and visual storytelling. Topics include finding the perfect light, crafting dynamic compositions, visual language, photographic genres, story development, editing & image processing, and much more. Through a combination of hands-on practice, creative exploration, and mentorship, students will not only gain technical proficiency in photography but also cultivate their storytelling skills and artistic vision. By the end of the course, students will have a deeper appreciation for the power of visual storytelling and the ability to create impactful narratives through their photographs.

Objectives:

  • Be able to convey compelling stories through images

  • Use visual elements intentionally - mood, tone, perspective, and symbolism

  • Explore photographic genres including portraiture, landscape, documentary, and street photography

  • Conceptualize and develop visual narratives, from brainstorming ideas to planning and executing photo projects

  • Enhance and refine your images by applying photo editing techniques and software tools

  • Participate in constructive critiques and discussions to analyze, provide, and receive feedback on each other’s work

  • Build a portfolio of your best work showcasing your progress and accomplishments as a visual storyteller

Prerequisites

This class is limited to Teens between 14 and 18 years old. This course is suited for photographers using any type of camera (including smartphones). Students should be able to select and bring pictures for daily critiques in class. Familiarity with Adobe Lightroom is a plus.

Course Prep

For the first class, students should bring pictures related to subjects that they are interested in and/or have been working on.
