The Language of Photography (Dec 6-7)
Dates: December 6 - 7, 2025
Meetings: Saturday & Sunday, 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM CST (2 sessions)

Skill Level: Open to All Levels
This course aims to expand and deepen students’ creative thinking, inviting them to reconsider their work and explore some of the numerous possibilities that exist in visual art, and photography in particular. Internationally celebrated artists Anderson & Low will explain many of the different ways in which narrative threads can be explored and used in both individual images and also in an entire project. Overt, oblique, and implied narratives will be reviewed and discussed with references from the entire history of photography as well as other visual art forms. Topics include (among others) intentional photography, visual triggers, aesthetics and color vs B&W, symbolism, modernism and abstraction, thinking outside the box, and how to break the rules (the right amount of wrong). In addition to reviewing different kinds of narratives, Anderson & Low will also discuss how viewer perception affects images.
Note: some images presented in this course contain nudity or subjects relating explicitly to death. Please do not attend if either of these will offend you.

Develop your creativity and diversify your photography
Increase your understanding of the expressive possibilities in photography
Understand and practice the importance of image design
Increase your understanding of how narrative threads can be presented in images
Engage in photo critique discussions about your peers
Receive valuable input about your current and future projects
Prerequisites:
While this course is open to everyone, having pre-existing knowledge of photographic art in all its forms will be helpful. We welcome everyone, but intermediate and advanced students are likely to gain the most from attending.
Course Prep:
For the first class, we encourage students to bring a selection of up to 10 pictures representing their photographic work (either as prints or digital files on a jump drive).
