Dana Scruggs is known for her dynamic and abstract fine art images of the male form. In this masterclass, Dana will focus on how she applied her unique aesthetic to her editorial work, which has enabled her to photograph celebrities, athletes, politicians, and notable people of our time for the likes of The New York Times, TIME Magazine, Vogue, GQ, The Atlantic, New York Magazine, Rolling Stone, and many others. Reflecting on her experience and deep understanding of the editorial process within the publishing world, Dana will provide valuable insight on how to create and select images that tell a story while staying true to your artistic point of view.
Dana’s photoshoots often need to be completed in a tight timeframe (sometimes within as little as 10 minutes). Having limited information about the setting or the lighting conditions is also quite common. In this masterclass, Dana will offer guidance on methods to ensure a successful shoot, even with very little time and resources. Students will learn how to expand their portrait capabilities and make their work more dynamic, cohesive, and noticeable to editors.
During the second day, participants will create portraits of one another, utilizing the insights and skills they learned during the first class while making use of available light, an off-camera flash, or one single strobe. For the final class, participants will present their edits of 6-10 images for a group critique which will provide useful feedback, insights, and suggestions.
Objectives:
Engage your subjects in a way that creates unexpected, intimate, and/or dynamic portraits
Become adept at setting the tone before and during the shoot to inspire confidence and willingness from your subject
Be able to direct your subject so you can create a variety of poses and facial expressions resulting in a wide range of images to choose from
Utilize a single light or available light effectively and create portraits in most environments
Improve your location-scouting skills to utilize the areas that will amplify your vision the most
Learn how to edit your photography session into a cohesive body of work that tells a story
Prerequisites:
Photography I or being comfortable using your camera in Manual mode. Having some experience with editing and/or processing images is a plus. Participants are encouraged to bring a flash and/or portable strobe that they can use during this workshop.
Course Prep:
Students will be asked to introduce themselves and their work on the first day of class. Please bring a selection of 10-20 images representing the work that you are currently doing or the type of imagery you wish to create.
