Meetings: Wednesday, 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM CST (5 sessions)
Location: Online Zoom Classroom
Cost: $295 (HCP members receive a 10% discount)
Instructor: Alice S. Zimet
Skill Level: Open to All Levels
Thinking of buying your first photograph or starting to create a collection? This 5-part course, led by pioneer collector Alice Sachs Zimet, guides participants through everything they need to know to start (or expand!) their collection. Whether you are a beginner, a more seasoned collector, or a photographer curious to learn about the market, this course is for you!
Take advantage of this rare opportunity to peek into the collector’s mind offering abundant insider tips gathered across 40 years of collecting. Each session focuses on a different subject — the questions to ask before you spend a penny (signature indications, negative vs print date, condition reports, etc), how to buy at an auction, a virtual visit with a prominent dealer, and more. For the final session, students will research an image they (hypothetically?) might consider buying and present it to the class.
Objectives:
Understand the ‘collector’s mindset’ and the decision-making process
Learn the key questions to ask before buying a photograph
Realize the ‘do’s & don’ts’ of the photography market
Be able to bid successfully at an auction
Receive important resources and tips for purchasing prints
Identify your interest in order to craft the character of your collection
Research and analyze potential photographs to purchase
Materials:
One potential guest speaker depending on the number of students.
