A sketchbook is a valuable tool and vessel that helps artists preserve their thoughts, process their ideas, and grow as makers. In this online course, participants are introduced to various ways that the sketchbook can be used to develop the photographer's studio practice. Students will have the chance to peek inside sketchbooks of established and emerging artists to see examples of how they combine images and words. Demonstrations will allow students to learn new techniques and broaden their understanding of what types of materials belong in a photographer’s sketchbook. Students will also be guided through exercises to begin and maintain a daily sketchbook practice. Writing prompts to be completed outside of class will be designed to increase visual literacy, foster creativity, and promote reflection about what you find appealing in photography. Students will share their own sketchbook progress weekly and will leave the course with a sketchbook of thoughtful reflections on photography and images they find inspiring.
Objectives:
Explore the variety of ways a sketchbook can be used in a photographer’s studio practice
Begin and maintain a regular sketchbooking practice
Demonstrate artistry through self-expression within a personal sketchbook
Experiment with materials to expand the knowledge base of your processes
use the sketchbook to recognize connections in concept and technique within your personal photographic practice
Prerequisites: None
Course Prep:
Students need to have a blank sketchbook. Additional materials will be discussed in sessions.
