Ideally, art should not be competitive. However, as the Art World uses a de-facto filtering mechanism to single the best from the rest, it is important to identify your strengths and effective approaches that can improve your chances for a rewarding career. In today’s art world, successful artists are entrepreneurs who follow the “market’s logic” and can manage both creative and business sides of their practices. How can you get to that stage where you can share your talent with a wider audience?
In this workshop, students will understand the key ingredients that can lead to a successful career in the world of photography and the arts. Using case studies and applying professional methods and tools, participants will identify their position in the complex global art market, define and design their desired career path, start building a supportive network in the industry, and work toward a long-term and sustainable development of their artistic career.
Objectives:
Realize the complexity of the international photography industry and its main pillars
Learn to position yourself in the complex global network or art practitioners
Develop long-term strategic approach to your work
Receive practical advice and tools for designing the roadmap of your desired career path
Navigate wisely between art and commerce and/or art and journalism
Discuss self-presentation, stress-handling techniques, and pitching strategies
Edit your portfolio to align with markets' demands
Review case studies of successfully implemented career strategies
Prerequisites:
Having a completed personal project (or a personal project in development).
Course Prep:
Students need to be ready to present a project they would like to promote in the art world in class.
