Ben Lowy

Ben Lowy started his career as a conflict photographer in Iraq and Afghanistan. Now, he swims with sharks and sea lions, has eaten monkey brains and boiled larvae, and climbed a mountain - or three. He’s flown backwards off an aircraft carrier and crawled through a 20-year-old tunnel 1000 feet underground. He’s done many things in the name of photography, and hasn’t been kicked out of the house yet.

Lowy received a BFA from Washington University in St. Louis in 2002 and began his career covering the Iraq War in 2003. Since then, he has covered major stories worldwide. In 2004, he attended the World Press Joop Swart Masterclass, was recognized in Photo District News 30, and his images of Iraq were chosen by PDN as some of the most iconic images of the 21st century. Lowy has received numerous awards including acknowledgments from World Press Photo, POYi, PDN, Communication Arts, American Photography, and the Society for Publication Design. Additionally, Lowy was a finalist for both the Oskar Barnak Award and Critical Mass, included in Magenta Flash Forward 2007, and the OSI Moving Walls 16 exhibit. He has exhibited his work from Iraq, Darfur, and Afghanistan in several gallery and museum shows, and has exhibited works at the Tate Modern, SF MOMA, Houston Center for Photography, Invalides, and Arles.
