Stephan Hillerbrand

Stephan Hillerbrand is part of the collaborative artistic team Hillerbrand+Magsamen who have worked collaboratively for over 20 years on videos, photography, installations, and interdisciplinary performances. They work with process and embrace the unpredictable.

Hillerbrand+Magsamen’s work has been presented at festivals including the Ann Arbor Film Festival, Fusebox Festival, Austin, CounterCurrent Festival, Houston, and Diffusion Photography Festival, Wales. Exhibitions include the Grand Rapids Art Museum, Everson Museum, Syracuse, and the Center for Photography Woodstock.

Hillerbrand+Magsamen have received grants from the Sustainable Arts Foundation, Austin Film Society, Houston Arts Alliance, and Experimental Television Center. They have participated in residency programs including Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, New York, Experimental Television Center, Owego, Wassaic Projects, Wassaic, Vermont Studio Center, Johnson, I-Park, East Haddam, Elsewhere, Greensboro, Lawndale Art Center, Houston, and Santa Fe Art Institute, Santa Fe.

Hillerbrand is a Professor of Photography at the University of Houston, a National Endowment for the Arts and Art Matters Grant recipient, a MacDowell Colony Fellow, and a recipient of two Fulbright Fellowships in Germany.
