Intuition and experimentation are an integral part of the creative process, yet developing a theme as a way to direct your work is essential in creating meaningful work. This masterclass focuses on students’ work. Its goal is to develop and define each participant’s personal vision and direction for a series they might want to embark on or have already started. Each day we will review students’ portfolios and projects, discuss their interests and goals, and engage in group critiques helping participants recognize, consider, and apply elements that are critical for the development of their photographic practice. Subjects will include emotional and conceptual aspects of the work, decision-making, technical consideration (including post-production), editing & sequencing, and recommended next steps.

Elinor Carucci will present her world-renowned editorial and artistic work in-depth and provide students with invaluable practical information on topics such as the complexities of photographing your personal environment, presentation formats (digital vs. print), working with curators, photographing for magazines and working with photo editors, gallery representation and working with gallery owners, how to define, articulate, and present your projects, and much more. Bodies of work of leading photographers will also be presented and analyzed while discussing the artists’ process and technical and/or conceptual approaches.
