Utilizing alternative photographic processes, “dust to dust” examines the substance of our being from the big bang theory and dust particles, to the nature of light on our real and imagined landscapes. Creation myths idealize our origins, the elusiveness of memory reshapes the understanding of our histories, and our illusion of continuity negates our ever changing existence –  in “dust to dust”, Houston Center for Photography examines different takes on interwoven subject matters with four dynamic artists all using experimental photographic processes as components of their practice.

Through formal and material interventions, “infinite gestures for finding luck” draws from my mother’s imprecise knowledge of our ancestral Chinese traditions and rituals. Drag, the lighting studio and the aesthetics of Camp are used to reimagine Chinese marriage ceremonies to call into question patriarchal notions of gender. The commerical language of product photography catalogs historical Chinese and Chinatown objects to challenge the ways Euro-America conflates objects to East Asiatic femininity, and generalizes Asian culture.
