Street Photography is a genre with both a rich history and an ever-evolving present. Over the past two decades, new technologies, techniques, and visual approaches have transformed the genre into something wholly its own. This course will work with students’ approaches to the genre and identify their photographic strengths, encouraging them to develop a unique and robust photographic voice. While this course is primarily practical, contemporary street photographers will be discussed and analyzed. Students’ street photography practices will be enriched by instruction on advanced techniques, such as nighttime photography, portable lighting solutions, portrait series, and complex composition strategies. At the end of the course, participants will be encouraged to embark on a personal series based on their interests, concepts, and strengths. Students are expected to complete weekly assignments and present their work for critique in class.
